"Shorty" Upper Way Tube Removal?

I can not see how it is possible to cut the tubes while the Shopsmith is assembled. Especially not with a pipe cutter.

This is an excellent opportunity to tear the Shopsmith down and after making the modifications put it back together while making sure reassembly is done correctly. Short cuts of the proposed nature never work (at least not for me).

Dusty, as you state, disassembly would be the best approach; however, not sure I want to lift the power head off. I just may go that route, and take the tubes to a machine shop with a horizontal band saw to cut them for me.

A pipe cutter need not go 360* all at once. By reversing the cutter, the uncut portion can be .cut. Small bites and switch often. Cumbersome • yes.

Got it done. Piece of cake cutting through the tubes with my reciprocating saw with a new Diablo carbide tooth blade. I also did not take off the power head or carriage. I properly braced and supported everything. Worked fine.

Amazing what taking off only 14" did for my shop space. Got my bandsaw hooked up to it, and all is good. Thanks for all the tips.
