Spindle Rough

Post by tpritch »

Starting to notice my spindle on my Shopsmith 500, feeling rough when I advance. Like maybe the gear and rack not meshing very well. My thoughts are should I replace it? Is there something I should check first? Like making adjustments?

Sounds like sawdust in the works to me. Have you cleaned out the insides lately?

I am having the same problem with my 510 when used in the drill press position. It is long overdue for a cleaning so I will find out soon if sawdust is the problem or something.

I agree, clean it up and follow the instructions for regular maintainence. I had a problem with my 510, and found several rough edges on the quill. I asked on of the demo guys, and he had me " very lightly" smooth the rough spots with a flat file. Use the edge and get the corner into the spline cut. It worked fine.
