ER parts

I have recently acquired a Model ER (just ER not 10ER). However, I need the headstock and the tailstock. Does anyone know where I can get parts for this model? I have looked on eBay and the like....

Also, does 10ER parts work on model ER?

I am new to shopsmith so I am not sure if I posted this in the right place or if this is a dumb question.

There are only 10E and 10ER's, so yours will be a 10ER, even if the nameplate only says ER.

Are you actually missing the headstock? Does it just need repair, or did you mean the headrest.

As Ron said posting pictures can help in identifying what you have and what you need. As for why you have a Shopsmith that says Model ER, when Magna Engineering changed from the Model 10E to the 10ER they only put ER on the Logo/Serial Number plate. I believe this was to save redesigning the plate since 10ER would not fit in the space that previously had 10E. Later the plate was redesigned and had 10ER on it. To help you in identifying what parts you have and need yourself refer to the Owners Manual. If you do not have one check under the Maintenance and Repair section for Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. In it you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there and others are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Everett has become the Shopsmith historian by saving and restoring manuals and other documents. There you will find a section on the Model 10's and manuals. Use the Model 10ER restored Manual even though it may be for tools made after yours it will be the closest. Because of the changes made during the time the Model 10E and 10ER was manufactured from 1947 through 1953 some parts have to be replaced as a unit while others can be replaced individually.. As an example there were both double wedge locks and later single wedge locks used on the Headstock and the Carriage. These are not interchangeable. There were 7 versions of the Headstock, 4 of the Tailstock, 3 of the Carriage, 2 of the base, 3 of the Quill and I could go on and on. Since yours says Model ER the majority of the changes occurred while they were labeled ER so it is important to get the correct parts if you are replacing individual parts. If all this sounds to daunting of a task don't worry we can help you through it.

I want to use my 10ER (which I know now is the model I have) as a lathe. I need what I am calling the headstock and the tailstock but I see from the picture is not the correct terms. I am needing whatever goes in these to hold wood so I can turn wood on the lathe.

Here is my pic. I have circled where the parts would go.

I will check out all the links you guys have suggested. Again, I am really thankful for the friendly help and the speed at which it was given!

If you have any suggestions on what I need to use this as a lathe, I would appreciate it.

shop has used the 5/8" drive shaft for all of the arbors over the years they have some mods to them.
the driver center should be the some for all models under the Shopsmith name
the cup center or live center should be a #2 morse taper

I have used the driver center and cup center I got with my 510 on my 10ER

For turning bowls and similar objects, you can use the faceplates shown in your picture.
There are also many specialty accessories you may need (or want), so check out all of the lathe accessories on Shopsmith's Product Catalog. While some of these accessories may not be compatible with ER's, I'm sure other users who do turn will be able to advise.

Many of these accessories are also available used on ebay, and sometimes places like Craigslist.

The posts above are correct that many of the current accessories will work on the Model 10ER. These include the Lathe Drive, Cup Center or Live Center, Face Plates (although you already have them), Lathe Tool Rests but not the arm or post (yours looks to be homemade or from another source). All Shopsmith Arbors and spindle accessories have a 5/8” smooth bore and are made to attach to the 5/8” spindle shaft of any Model 10, Mark series or Sawsmith machine (Shopsmith legal disclaimer - current arbors and attachments are for use on Mark V and Mark 7 machines and not intended for use on previous models.) That being said the current Lathe Drive Center part number 505715 will work just as well as the original Lathe Drive Center part number 102-34X on a Model 10E or the new Mark 7. The only change made to this part over the years, besides the part numbers changing, was the set screw changed from a 1/8” to a 5/32" Allen wrench size in late 1953 and the black protective coating was added starting in 1964. Pretty much any accessory made today that attaches to the 5/8" Spindle or the Quill (ie. the Mortising Attachment) will fit on the Model 10's but not all are the best option for use on them.

I had suggested you check Everett's Google Drive for manuals but also check out the book restored there Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. It is the first edition and uses the Model 10ER.
