batteries not included???

Post by wa2crk »

Was just perusing the current issue of Wood mag and saw the Metabo battery powered 10" table saw. It can be powered by either a battery or an AC adaptor, but neither the battery or the adapter are included in the price of $600.00 for the bare tool. Battery and charger is $170.00 and the AC adapter is also $170.00. Whatever you choose the total is $770.00 for the saw. I think that I am getting cheap in my old age.

I can't speak to the pricing here, but it is actually preferred to have the bare tool sold for less than the package deal. The whole battery powered tool ecosystem takes some getting used to, that is for sure. Once you already have a couple of lithium ion batteries on one tool company's platform, you don't want to have to pay again and again for another spare battery and another charger to sit and collect dust every time you purchase a new tool from them. At least I don't. I remember when cordless tools first came out many years ago and every new tool that you bought came with battery and charger always. Today, I like being able to buy just the bare tool (at a lower cost presumably) than the package deal because I have enough batteries and chargers now (because I own more than one tool on that battery platform). The only problem is that sometimes the advertising isn't clear that you are buying just a bare tool without battery sometimes.
Just my opinion...

I'll second what RFGuy said and give my examples.

Several years ago I bought a Ryboi "bag o tools" during one of Home Depot's sales, came with a drill, impact driver, small circular saw, couple other tools, and two batteries. Later, I bought a weed eater, I think with a larger amp hour battery, as I didn't think (and later confirmed) that I might need more battery capacity than the two small ones for a long weed eating session. A few months back, I purchased 4 more batteries and a couple tools a during a sale (2 batteries, charger, bag for ~$100, free tool of choice up to $100 value); and since then have picked up a couple additional cheap bare tools. I can't imagine buying any more batteries for quite some time until several fail, but have plans to pick up a few more bare tools.

I also have a few eGo tools (mower, blower, chainsaw). I bought each of those with a battery so that I felt comfortable having enough for the chainsaw if I were away from charging capability, but now have enough that if I should purchase a new tool it would almost assuredly be without battery.
