Quill stop?

I want to first start out by stating that I am new to the shopsmith family and really new to this forum. I recently bought a greenie mark 5. It is kind of a mess, been cleaning and testing various attachments I got with it (band saw, jointer, scroll saw). The head unit works perfectly, the only thing I did to it was replace the power cord and while I was doing that removed years of dirt and dust from inside the power head, most of the filth had settled in the motor pan.

Introductions out of the way, I have been using it some and found an issue. I looked through the forums and haven’t found the answers I was looking for, anyhow the quill stop (? To set a stop for drilling) does not seem to work properly. I can adjust the ring with the depth measurements on it but when I turn the wing nut to set the stop, it locks the quill in place...the quill will not move. I am assuming I am either too dumb to figure it, it is missing a part, or something is worn out and needs replaced.

I am not at the machine at the moment, but did find the link on here with the exploded parts view. From memory it seems all the parts shown were in place and in the correct order. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
First thing would be to confirm that all parts are there, in the right order, and in the right orientation. The serrated sides of the two serrated washers should face the feed stop. So you have an inside flat washer, an inside serrated washer with the serration facing out, the Feed Stop (ring with measurements), the second serrated washer with the serration facing in, then the stop lock (wing nut). When assembled and snugged, you should see a gap between the Feed Stop and the Spring Housing, necessary for he Feed Stop to rotate freely.
Checking these should get us started, you may find the problem or eliminate possibilities. I think I've experienced this before and it had to do with the serrated sides facing the wrong direction in my case, but it was a long time ago.

It is 'possible' that a lack of understanding of how it works is at play. It is not totally intuitive(there are some other things with a SS that share that propensity).

So, how to set it:

The quill should be fully retracted.*

The quill stop wingnut should be loosened.(the one where the dial is)

Then rotate the dial to the amount of extension of the quill is desired.

Tighten the wing nut.

The quill feed should stop when the quill is advanced the amount set on the dial. The dial will rotate and indicate "0" when the stop is reached. It thus indicates the amount of extension remaining as the quill is advanced.

* Actually the quill need not be fully retracted when the stop is being set. This allows setting with the quill partially extended(as when a bit is extended to just touch the workpiece) and the depth of the resultant hole can then be set.

Important note that I left out: Farthest inside of the other bits I listed is a snap ring, It needs to be intact and in its groove. If it isn't right, you probably won't have the gap I mentioned when the stop is snug.

Following the directions given above by JPG will work for setting the Quill Stop or Depth Stop as it is listed in the Manual. This is on the back side of the Headstock. Remember the Quill Lock on the front of the headstock must be unlocked to use the Depth Stop. If either of these are not working properly then something is not installed correctly. If so refer to DLB's items to check. The Retaining Ring must be set in the groove of the Pinion Shaft closest to the Spring Housing. The parts on both sides of the Pinion Shaft/Gear must be correct for the Depth Stop and Quill Lock to work. Let us know if you are still unable to resolve this problem.

JPG - Since the OP says he is working on a greenie...
In the referenced 2 of 3 thread you added a note: "retaining ring in pix behind flat washer is not included in older Mark 5." My greenie has the snap/retaining ring. Does the older M5 that does not have the retaining ring have something else that the OP should check for?

What I 'said' was: " Early Mark 5 did not have the flat washer between the retaining ring and the first serrated washer.[3/21/2012]".

The flat washer is what differs.
