Help please with pricing a used Mark V-510

Post by lsilies »

I am a long time Shopsmith user but am out of touch with prices on used equipment. I am trying to help a lady in St Louis with a 510 plus bandsaw and jointer. It belonged to her father who passed away. The 510 has a 3/4 hp Magna motor dating this machine back to 1955. The bandsaw's s/n indicates 1983. It has the cast iron table. The jointer bears a Magna label too. All the equipment looks very clean although I could not turn on the 510 for lack of electricity in the basement where it was stored. She wants to sell it as a package rather than part out the pieces. I would appreciate some help with pricing this package for her.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you look around your area for similar units and see what kind of prices they are selling for in your area. Location makes a huge difference in price.
Retirement areas seem to have lots of unused Shopsmiths for sale and low prices because of low demand. Areas with smaller cities seem to have fewer of them for sale, and more people interested in buying.
Try searching Craigslist for your area and any other buy-sell local sites to get an idea of price.

A couple of additional thoughts:

The base unit sounds like an early Mark 5 that has been upgraded with the 510 table system. (Shopsmith went to the 1-1/8 HP headstock in 1962, and introduced the 510 in 1985). To my thinking, it is worth considerably more than a basic Mark 5 but less than a true 510 because of that. (True 510 would, I believe, have a 2 bearing quill and 1-1/8 HP motor.)

The basic 510 should include those items you list as SS item 555137. So if you are saying that it has two pairs of floating tables etc. that should increase value compared to a 510. Extra floating tables are extremely handy. In NIB condition, I'd think this might be worth a couple hundred bucks.

In my area I'd expect this to be priced $800 - 1200 or priced to sell fast at maybe $600. It seems to be a buyer's market except for PowerPro.

Thanks, Gary and David. You both offered good ideas and confirmed the direction I was leaning.

I always appreciate this group whether I am seeking advise or perusing ideas to get more out of my Shopsmith.
