DIY DVR motor upgrade / replacement

Re: DIY DVR motor upgrade / replacement
There is already smaller timing belt that is connecting power takeoff shaft to the spindle/ quill.
I thought to connect new DVR motor with spindle and get rid off power takeoff since I never used it.
There is enough room in headstock to slide motor back and have a belt inside too.
Motor mounting will be a little bit more difficult but doable.
Will see.

Cut 80mm pocket for motor flange on CNC mill. Everything fits like a glove.
I tried to upload video of motor running but file is to large for this forum.
New belt should be here tomorrow for a real test. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk

Re: DIY DVR motor upgrade / replacement
Just a quick update.
New timing belt arrived and I installed it without any problem. Thanks for a link to belt calculator.
Since I had everything taken apart I noticed. Crunching bearing noise that was comming from spindle.
Spindle on my machine has two 50x80x16mm bearings and I am looking around to purchase replacement.
Original ones are NSK 6010Z.
If anyone has any advice please let me know before I place an order. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk

The originals are still available. Not sure if some of them are originals but equivalent.CNC4FUN wrote:Just a quick update.

You are pretty much on yer own here. You are working with a machine with which we are not familiar.
Yes we are interested in your journey.

It was also made in a number of other names. It’s origins were Fox Super Shop invented by Tony Fox. He was a MAGNA / Shopsmith employee who proposed this as an Upgraded Mark 5. Shopsmith declined and he developed it himself. Central Machinery was one of the names it was made under, and it was marketed by Harbor Freight.CNC4FUN wrote:Machine is Iron Wood brand.
It is hand me down and motor had some issues even before I got it.
I converted this machine to CNC lathe / horizontal mill and goal is to maybe get to control this motor directly from mach3 someday.

New bearings are installed and everything is ready to go but....
I just discovered lengthwise crack on timing belt pulley. It is right at key groove and looks like manufacturing defect.
I used bearing puller to disassemble everything and don't think that I caused the fracture.

That's is unfortunate. I am not familiar with that piece and how it differs, yet I can say that a good machinist can likely fabricate something. It won't be inexpensive if you have to go that route, but it can be made. You may be just the machinist to fabricate it on a CNC.CNC4FUN wrote:New bearings are installed and everything is ready to go but....

Re: DIY DVR motor upgrade / replacement
Depending on how it is put together you may be able to replace the cracked part with something similar. Is the timing belt pulley a common size or can it be replaced with a similar sized pulley/gear? The belt length may change with a change in size.

It is "L" style pulley. 3/4" belt width, 24 teeth, 50mm bore, 72mm dia and I ordered some to try to replace it.thunderbirdbat wrote:Depending on how it is put together you may be able to replace the cracked part with something similar.
