New Model 510 Owner

First post.

I recently brought home my new pride and joy, a Model 510 Mark V (09-04-96) and I am going through the maintenance video on Hands Online at the Shopsmith Academy (http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/SS_Arch ... nance.htm). About 11:53 in to the video, there is a procedure described for loosening the set screw to remove the quill.

There is no set screw on the top of my headstock!

Is there an alternate way to remove the quill for the model 510 headstock, so I can clean the teeth, without having to completely disassemble my headstock?

Also, the rip fence and miter gauge are missing, and so is the rip fence for the bandsaw. I'm about 30 seconds away from winning an auction for a rip fence, but and having a real tough time finding a rip fence for the band saw. Any pointers on where/how to search for a replacement? Are there differences in rip fences for bandsaws that I have to watch out for for different models?

I bet there is one. It's filled in and painted over. Look back about 2.25 inches from the end of the headstock. You should see a dimple, maybe inside a round circle in the casting. Dig out the putty and there's your setscrew.

I can see I have MUCH to learn! The set screw was indeed "hidden" under a soft, pewter-like substance (putty?). Strangest putty I ever did see! This unit came to me in great condition, but it has obviously never been thoroughly maintained. I am actually probably the first person to ever pull it apart. Fortunately, it's got maybe 25 hours total run time in it, and never did anything other than function as a table saw (since the saw blade was the only piece not in it's original packaging).

Anyhow, I did manage to pull the putty plug without too much damage, so I can replace it.

I just use wood putty... (wood doe)... works just fine for me!

Congratulations on your win and your great success acquiring the Mark V.

With no more hours than that, you have an almost brand new Mark V. Before it has another hour to log, do a good job of cleaning and LUBRICATING. Lubricating regularly is the life line for this machine.

If it just set in storage, you might (just maybe) need to replace belts but you'll know that after you log some hours. If it runs smooth and reasonably quiet the belts will not be a problem.

If the bandsaw has a cast iron table, there was no fence made by Shopsmith for it. If it is the aluminum table, then you need the fence and the rails to use it.

Thanks for the input. I believe the table for the BS sold in 1996 was aluminum. What I am hearing then, is that I will need some sort of kit, or go after-market, such as an Incra, or Kreg fence?

If you look at the exploded view http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/partscat/bandsawfenceexpview.htm it shows the rail for the fence as part of the "Bandsaw Fence Assembly" (items 21, 22 and 23). Does that mean that if you buy a #555645 it comes with it? http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/itemfind.htm?item=555645&Submit=Find+Item
