Earthquake in Salt Lake City, Utah area.

My Wife's neice lives there. She says it was near the surface so they have some damage. Their buildings aren't earthquake hardened like California so they will likely see more damage. The neice couldn't go to work because the building she works in suffered damage and nobody is allowed in until the damage is assessed.

It was a Magnitude 5.7 centered just SW of the Salt Lake International Airport. It occurred at 7:09AM. We live about 35 miles as the crow flies from the epicenter. It shook the house pretty good but no damage here. So far there have been 33 after shocks. The largest was Magnitude 4.4 which is the only one we have felt. USGS has said the earthquake occurred about 6 miles below the surface of the earth.

Overall damage has been light even in Magna which is very close to the epicenter. No injures or deaths. The airport is closed. No damage to the runways but they have to assess the terminal building before they let people back in.

No but I wondered if anyone would pick up on that. Magna was the epicenter for the earth quake. For those that are wondering what we are talking about, Frank and Bob Chambers who formed Magna Engineering along with Hans Goldschmidt the inventor of the Shopsmith were from Magna, UT. Magna Engineering was named for Magna, UT. Another interesting bit of history is that the Magna Engineering internal news letter was called the Magpie. Magpies are very prolific in Utah.

We are up to 52 after shocks. They are getting farther apart and all have been in the 2 to 3 magnitude range.
