Alignment of speed change plate on model 500

Post by kcormier »

When my shop smith model 500 is running at slow speed my speed change label is set about midway. I believe the speed change label should read slow when in fact it is running slow. Is there a video on how to change the speed change alignment indicator??

The manual has a High speed adjustment procedure step by step that should get it correct for you.

Shown on the link above is the High Speed Adjustment and setting the indicator ring to it. If you believe your headstock is running the entire speed range but the indicator is out of place you can remove the speed control dial and rotate the ring to the correct position. Since you are going to have it apart it wouldn't hurt to check the high speed adjustment at the same time and while at it lubricate the headstock parts too. A few more steps but may well be worth your time servicing your headstock now rather than later.
