Quill Assembly drive Screw broken, is it worth Fixing?
I picked up a an older Shopsmith that had been upgraded over the years. It came with the 520 fence system, a bandsaw,a jointer, strip sander, brand new-still-in-box belt sander, and a bunch of parts left over from upgrading the table and fence system. I noticed that the quill return was a little weak. After a few times using it, it stopped working. After taking it apart I discovered that the drive screw (part #41 /145378) was broken. I see that Shopsmith sells this part for 80 cents. It looks like I will have to drill out the broken screw end. Has anyone had any luck repairing this, or am I better off using it for spare parts and looking for a used quill assembly?

I take it that holds the spring end stationary? If so you could rtill out the broken one and tap a bit larger.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

If you have another working drill press, you can try drilling out the center of the pin with a cobalt or titanium bit.
You can also drill a new hole in the same line as the old one to install the new pin. That should be a "Press Pin", No threads...
If you don't have the ability to drill out the pin and want to keep the machine original, You can take the shaft to a machine shop.
Otherwise, Look for a replacement quill feed shaft.

I had no success installing a new pin in the shaft. Even after removing the old broken pin and installing a new pin. I have dozens of these assemblies laying around so contact me at bill.mayo@verizon.net. Shipping would be most of the expense.

An 'easy out' might get it removed. The center is soft, but the outer surface with twist is hard. Unless it is completely removed, a new screw will not hold. Even then it might not hold. Loctite might help.
Drilling a new hole is possible, but it must be the correct size for the new screw.
I think the proper name for the screw is a 'posidrive' screw
Make that a twist rivet.

I believe the proper name is a U-Drive Screw. It is the same fastener used to secure the ID plate on the 10ER. Yes they are very hard. On the 10ER I ground the head off to remove the ID plate and then drove the remaining part through the casting since it was a through hole. Obviously not an option in this case.JPG wrote:An 'easy out' might get it removed. The center is soft, but the outer surface with twist is hard. I know this is an old problem, according to the shopsmith parts list they charge $4.95 for this part. Doing some home work found this part for $5.00 for 50.
I drilled out the middle of the sheared off "screw"and used a screw extractor to clear out the hole. Drove in a new fastener and it seems to hold fine. I tried putting in a vise and pulling it out and it held fine.
Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem
While a lot of used parts are available for the shopsmith I think this is an inexpensive fix.
