I think I'm hearing more of a scraping sound. Might be the little spacer/washer between the sheaves and the motor bracket??

I agree with the eliminate one potential source at a time philosophy, But other than the quill and the motor the other 'stuff' is almost as bad as complete disassembly. It all requires belt tension elimination and parts movement or removal and makes it impossible to duplicate run conditions.

"It" is a sleeve between the fan sheave and the motor bearing inner race.

Good catch!
Very possible that the sheave is rubbing the motor housing. That is a known problem.

Would this sleeve's disintegration cause the sound to come and go? What I am picturing is that as little chunks come off they make noise for a little while as they are chewed up, and then the noise goes away until another chunk comes off. Not sure that explains the brief sound that resembles a few 2" stones rattling around against the sides of a metal bucket.

Hoping to start investigation tomorrow.

The movable sheaves do a lot of rattling on their own.

I have removed the motor from the headstock and when I turn the motor there is a squeaking sound, although the sheave does rotate freely. The sheaves are also moving in and out nicely. I am pretty sure the spacer has worn down since the motor sheave looks much too close to the motor housing. Does anyone have advice on what specific tool or tools are best for removing (and reinstalling) the snap ring (and where to acquire one)? I have viewed Jacob Anderson's video on motor sheave components, where he removes the snap ring. ( At minute 3:15 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HoUwYu ... e=youtu.be ) ...it's just not clear from the video what tool he is using, what size, etc. I can easily visualize mutilating it if I improvise.

Thanks!

They are just called snap ring pliers. Mine are old and no longer available, but the Channel Lock version with replaceable tips is similar and a 'best seller' according to Amazon. There are many available, different size tips and some do only internal or only external snap rings. If the Channel Lock is like mine it does both. You should be able to pick up some version at most home centers and most auto parts stores, Northern, etc.

I'm making an assumption here that SS has always used snap rings for this, and I'm pretty sure that is right. If you look at the end of the shaft you should see two small holes close together at the edge of the ring.

The fan sheave ( I think you are calling it motor sheave) should ride close to the motor and should not be moving. It is held in place by a set screw.

Edit - Note: Use something to hold the spring in compression off the retaining ring during removal and installation. The video showed the 'bored board' method which is fine.

If yours has the cup spring retainer(rather than the washer) take very good care of the ring. They are of a type that is not easily found. I am not sure if it is the same on the washer retainer.

Bearing in the control sheave? If it fails the sheave is not supported and can rattle around on the shaft. These machines should be re-built about every 50 years or so. :D :D :D

Not sure why I didn't find snap ring pliers on my first google search. Turns out I already have some 90 degree needle nose pliers that might do the trick. I like Anderson's bored board, gonna give that a go.

Yes, I s/b saying 'fan sheave' not 'motor sheave'.
