Hi, soon to be gone off of Flickr are these pictures. Maybe they would be handy here... I think you can figure out what is what, right?

Single bearing in this post and two bearing in the next.

And for the last of the quill pictures the two bearing...

This is only one of a couple designs but I don't have pictures of any of the others, sorry.

Hey Ed, Great pictures! That helps me a lot. Do all two bearing quills have a two piece shaft.

What tools are required to disassemble and reassemble ie, Is a bearing press or puller required? What are the part numbers of the bearings?

Shopsmith Quill

Post by billmayo »

The two piece quill shaft appears to be the first implentation of the 2 bearing quill from Shopsmith. They soon went to a solid shaft due to problems with the 2 piece shaft. I have only found one 2-piece quill shaft in a dozen 2 bearing quills where I replaced the bearings.

If anyone has some picture or is willing to take some pictures of the two bearing quill in it redesigned state they would fit right in here....

If your will to take one I'd go for something like the third one in the first post... I think that makes it clear enough.

Hi,

With regard to these excellent photos, there is shown a fairly flimsy washer that looks like what I've obtained & saved in my latest teardown. Unfortunately I don't know exactly where the flimsy washer goes. Is it between the quill-bearing and the silver-colored collar piece?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Here's the flimsy washer location on the single bearing shaft. Hope the view helps.

The washer only purpose is to help keep the quill shaft some what centered for insertion into the plastic coupler on the Drive Sleeve Assembly when the quill housing is installed. Not needed if you have the time to play with trying to insert the quill shaft end into the plastic coupler. You may get lucky the first time.

I have found 4 different double bearing quills from Shopsmith. Each one has at least one bearing different from all the others so there is no real way to determine what size bearings (6 different bearings used) are needed until the quill is disassemblied. I have the two piece quill shaft with a roll pin, then a two piece shaft pressed together. The first one piece shaft has smaller bearings than the single bearing quill. Shopsmith finally got it right on the latest 2 bearing quill I removed for checking. The front (40mm vs 35mm or smaller) and back bearings (35mm vs 32mm) are bigger and wider than the single bearing quill or any of the other double bearing quills. I would recommend buying the double bearing quill from Shopsmith as the earlier models may need new replacement bearings.

I am finding the back bearing is smaller and narrower on the first 3 double bearing quills I found and has always needed a replacement bearing when disassemblied.

I finally located some ABEC3 rated 6202 5/8' NSK bearings for the single bearing quill that I am currently testing to see if there is any improvement over the C1 bearing I had been using.
