Need help with Planer Feed Motor and/or Controller

Funny washer

Purchased a used Mark V 510 from some friends. Model 555540.

Came with a "B" Planer. Was working well, but feed motor was getting very hot. Then it just stopped. No hum, grind, heat, nothing.

I've taken apart the controller and the motor and have 2 questions.

1. Two washers and a funny crimped washer with 3 notches fell out of the motor. Where do they go?

2. I can trace current through the controller circuit up to the rectifier. Would overheating cause it to go bad?

The funny(spring) washer likely fell out from a bearing bore.

Now what did you use to trace 'current' to the rectifier bridge?

Heat kills electronics. DC motors do not like AC.

I dont know what the bearing bore is, and there were 2 washers too.

I used a voltmeter. Using the AC setting up t the rectifier then switching to DC.

The first pix above is of the bearing bore.

The second pix reveals some potentially bad news.(scorched winding).

I wondered if that was the case.

I have a lead to a couple places that will rewind, but do you have a better recommendation?

And any thoughts on the rectifier. I can't imagine having to buy a new motor and controller from SS.

The rectifier appears to be a full wave bridge rectifier. If so, it should have 4 connections on the other side. It can be checked for functionality with an ohmmeter. If it is shorted or open, they are readily available. Current rating and physical size are important in getting a replacement.

Here is a thread with a schematic I posted that discussed some of what you seek. I was focusing more on manual crank they used to make as an option. Love to see Shopsmith make a limited run of these again for I am sure everyone with a Planer would want one.

So, took motor to a local motor shop. They diagnosed it as burned up and in need of rewinding. But they can't rebuild it since they say the glue needed to hold the magnets in place can't be purchased anywhere. Ideas?


Anyone know of anyone or anywhere that has successfully rewound one?

There is a sale ending today on the 240V planer feed motor. I don't have any idea if it can be converted to 120V or not.

I sent a email to them asking about that the other day and have not heard back. Of course the sale ends tonight... Maybe I’ll order anyway then cancel if it doesn’t work - still debating.
