Quill is really sticky.

All done! And so far seems to be working better than it ever has. All the locks and the quill seems to have a much better "feel" than before. I am going to run through some tests today to make sure cuts are still coming out square and true.

There are definitely some places where the instructions could be improved.

But here she is all clean and shiny new! I even restored the original production date label.

I'm very interested in how your problem is coming along. I just bought a "brand new" Mark 7. I is 2+ years old but never even plugged in. I have gone over the whole machine wiping down and waxing as the instructions say to and found the quill to have a bind in it midway. It is not the setscrew. I have removed the quill and it looks in fine shape, but I see tiny metal slivers on the quill pinion. I have brushed them off, but the bind is still there along with more slivers. Can't get a response from the Contact Us email.

Anyway, just wondering what you found.

Unfortunately I think a lot of us have experienced the company being a bit unresponsive when it comes to technical issues.

The majority of my problem was with the quill bore; you can look at the pictures upthread it was pretty gnarly.
First I used 800 wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. Then 1000, 1200. Then I used a 2" cylindrical polisher in my drill with super-fine polishing compound. Final polishing with a short-knap paint roller--fits the bore perfectly.

I had thought about using one of those bottle-brush style brake cylinder hones, but I was afaid that might remove too much material too fast.

The quill feed gear is coated with a silver material, I'm guessing it is an anti-stick compound. That is probably the source of the flakes you're seeing.

I'm going to suggest start a new thread for this problem, and post some pictures of what is looks like in there.

I got a response from SS Cust Svc and am working with them. I saw in another thread that Ohio has a shut-down order, so that might explain the slow response time. Right now, I'm happy that SS is going to try and assist.

jjrausch, were you able to resolve this? I've encountered an identical issue, also on Mark 7 of about the same age, that's also never been used.
