Table Saw Blade storage

Post by reible »

Gee I'm having a hard time finding the original posts that go with some of the pictures I'm erasing out at my Flickr site. This another one of them.

If you saw this before it is not new but for some of the newer members it might be of interest.

I keep a number of blades on arbors but I still have some that are not mounted, some are new (sale prices), some are used or saved for cutting this or that or maybe special and only taken out on special times. I also have a miter box that takes 10" blades... so one fine day I decided to make a storage box for them.

The box has a great deal of storage (if I remember right it holds 18 blades) in very little vertical space so a mix of tempered hardboard and plywood was used for the "drawers". The storage area was made in the plywood using a router and circle jig. Note I didn't want a tight fit on the blade so the hole is over sized.

The box is made of 3/4" plywood scraps (minus the back). If you look along the right edge of the box you will see an set back, that was an idea I had to help get the "drawers" to line up when you are trying to put them in. It works quite well, you start the drawer on the left then when it is started it is easy to get the right side started. If you make something like this give the idea a try, I think you will like it.

Wonder what that hole was for? Wonder no more.

I wanted to try using rivets for this application as they provided a good mechanical way of connecting the two materials together. You can sort of see that here:

So stay tuned for the last part of this post come up next.

I don't normally keep my stacked dado together so one exception to the normal 10" storage is the dado blades. I have two 8" drawers and two drawers for chippers. It was just as easy to cut two cutouts as one so both chipper drawers are alike... well until the blades are put in.

This box is VERY heavy.... if I were to do it again I might opt for say a 10 or blade limit and make two boxes. I was going to put a handle on it and front door but it now is on casters and rolled under my planner stand... When I have time I want to put it on/in the shelf under my shopsmith... if it will take the weight.

Another great idea, Ed. Thank you for sharing! :) And I do like that "set back" idea. I can see where that could come in handy for some other applications as well.
