Really, eBay sellers

Post by chapmanruss »

Today I noticed this ad on eBay with the following picture.

Lathe Spur Drive Center For Mini Jet/12”Atlas/ShopSmith 510er-Mark V/Delta New

How is this supposed to work on a Shopsmith tool?

Besides this ad today I saw Mark XII, Mark VII parts listed as Mark V and Mark V11, yes the letter V followed by the number eleven in ads.

I have to wonder do some of the sellers on eBay think that if they put the Shopsmith name on their ad we will blindly buy it. Maybe some are just plain clueless as to what a Shopsmith really is. I think in the case above they must be clueless and what is a 510er.

They put Mark V on just about every SPT listed but I know I can use my SPT's on my Mark 7, my Mark 2, my Power Stations and even my Model 10ER (I have the SPT adapters.) Some admit they know little if anything about the Shopsmith tools but others just seem to make it up as the go along.

There are sellers who do know and even have their own Shopsmith tools. I do know some eBay sellers are members on this forum. Other sellers do take the time to find out what they have before listing them. To those informed sellers I say thanks for providing good information so buyers with less experience can get the correct items they need especially parts no longer available new.

Time to put away my soapbox now.
Russ

Russ,

Yeah, I get your point on the mis-labeling that happens on eBay. I see it on lots of stuff, not just Shopsmith parts. Also happens a lot for Shopsmith re-sellers on Craigslist who don't know what they have got that they are trying to sale. To your question above though, presumably it has a MT2 morse taper and it should easily fit in a Shopsmith tailstock though right? I am using a somewhat similar livecenter with extension on my Mark V and I am very happy with it (see links below). Adding the MT2 extension made it much easier for me to do alignment for setting up the speed reducer for turning...

But it is a drive center not a live center. It goes on the head stock which of course it can't on a SS.

Oh, I see now. Yeah, that would be rather hard to do on a Shopsmith. Thanks.

Craigslist calls it “keyword spamming”, and purportedly prohibits it.

I’ve officially and repeatedly reported a couple of Craigslist advertisers that do it blatantly and continuously. To absolutely no avail. So I gave up.

Ah yes, the really fun part is when an ignoramus seller threatens to 'report you for harassment' when you try to educate them.
