I have only used a few of the taps and dies but those I've used have worked with standard screws and nuts.

Either you are fortunate or I am the opposite as my experience with the set I have is not so good. The resultant threads are simply not correct.

Quality varies... :D :D

I have a lot of taps and dies including bottom taps, pipe threads etc. some were my fathers basic but high quality sets, some were from my maternal grandfather who was a toolmaker for IHC in Indy for decades (I got all of his tools that were not stolen by some crooked roofers) and I had a decent basic set I had bought when first married. Since then I have bought hundreds at garage sales etc. many for literally pennies on the dollar. I bought a big tool box of machine tooling a few years ago about 50 miles from here at a US-40 garage sale that reached across the state. It turned out to have belonged to a deceased neighbor who had been a millwright for many years. I bought it very cheap, the sellers had no idea what the stuff was, just "tools". Apparently none of the shoppers did either.
My big weakness regarding taps and dies (besides still buying them when I get a chance  :) ) is metrics... I think that I have one metric tap that I bought for a repair on an older restored Mercedes 240D we had years ago.
I'm finally in good shape on metric wrenches and sockets but have only about enough metric nuts and bolts on hand to fill the palm of your hand... Farm stuff just never went metric while I was farming.
About that one metric tap... I'm not at all sure that if I need it that I could find it. :)

Mine works well for standard SAE stuff, too. There's a metric set. Might check yours if it's not giving you the results you expected.

This may be a case of "works" vs "works well".

I too have some 'inherited' machine tools(modelmaker) and can easily discern the difference in quality between those taps/dies inherited and those currently available at HF.

More than once I have had to go buy a good tap after trying a HF one.

I have totally abandoned Harbor Freight not that I ever embraced it. I thought, how bad can some of this stuff really be? The white paper face masks for dust protection, acid brushes, etc.. It is all junk. One minuscule elastic band on the face mask. As soon as you try and stretch it over your head it pops out of the one staple that holds it to the mask. I threw the whole package out. Acid brushes the same way. The bristles don't stay in long enough to complete a glue up. Same thing, I threw the package out.

I haven't been in Harbor Freight for years and don't plan to go back. For you guys that find their stuff acceptable good for you. I would rather pay a little (or a lot) more to get quality that lasts.
