New to Me 10er Serial # 81734

I bought a 10er, serial #81734 off CL from the original owner. I was looking for a cheap sander and decided to go have a look at a Shopsmith. An added bonus was the Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone book, and a ton of Woodworking Journals, all hard bound.

Today I started cleaning a bit....

I also made a video of the Speed Changer but it'll be about a week before its done uploading.

Nice, and the 3/4 hp, dual voltage motor too., It amazes me that they all seem to acquire paint spots over the years

Nice to see your thread here. I look forward to following the restoration of your new prize. Isn't it amazing how well it runs still even after 67 years. It sounded great "purring" along going through the speed changes. I did notice the belt tension looked a little loose but that can be corrected as you restore it. Your 10ER looks pretty complete as far as what they came with from the factory plus a few extras. The two items I did not see in any of the pictures were a Belt Guard and a Blade Guard. Keep us posted on your progress and we are always available to help.

Did you have to clean speed changer before you go it working? On the one I'm currently restoring the floating pulley was stuck.

I took it apart and cleaned it. There was about 1/16" of solidified grime on each end of the shaft and the center part of the pulley was frozen. A little bit of PB Blaster and a warm day freed the whole thing up in about an hour. A brass brush and some bronze wool cleaned it up right quick.

The belt and blade guard are gone. The seller was in the process of moving and said they might be in boxes somewhere, but i don't think I'll see them.

As far as restoring goes, cleaning, lubing, and some unfreezing seem the only thing in order. The bottom of the way tubes have some cake on the undersides towards the ends, the shaper fence adjustments are frozen, and the aluminum wedge locks for the quill and main "housing" were a bit rounded. I filed them flat and now it all holds fast. I don't plan on repainting anything but the base (at the base) at some point. The casters and caster levers work great after a brushing and lube.

I've been making new straight razor scales on my bandsaw and shaping them on the Shopsmith. I'm sawing veneers on my good old Delta bandsaw and truing/planing them up on the 10er as well.

Also, I'm "braining" a dust collection "hood" for the shopsmith...any suggestions would be helpful.

The belts. Yes, I have to adjust them again. I bought 23, 25, and 26 inch belts. right now the 23 and 25 are on there now.

Also, aligning the pulleys was critical. Mine were way out of whack.

I'll make another speed changer video tomorrow if I have time; a high speed one.
