Mark V Serial Number

Post by Scopie17 »

I inherited my dad's Shopsmith back in the late '90's, but used it very little. My guess is it's one or two years older than me, so made in 1955 or 1954. However, the serial number is not listed on the Shopsmith chart -- Serial No. 261540. The headstock is the type "A" with no service cut-out behind the Shopsmith emblem.

(1) Can I pin down the year of manufacture?

Now I am retired and want to repair it for use. I have some control mechanism issues to resolve to get it working again, but will save that for a subsequent post.

(2) How can I insert a picture here???

Thanks,
Scott

Scopie17,

First of all welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

If you read the Forum Thread form the link br549 posted you should have some answers. Your Mark 5 was likely made in March 1954. The chart of production by Months for Shopsmith Mark 5/V's doesn't start until April but the Mark 5 went on sale in March after it's introduction. The chart now on the SS site only lists production by year and doesn't account for the holes left from the month chart so it even less accurate. There is a 16 month span with no data in the Monthly Chart from Feb. 56 to May 57.
