Harsh sound with Mark V

If your belt is worn down you can tell by measuring across the face (widest part).
If it is under 1/2” it needs replacement as it can slip deeper into the “V” formed by the sheave sets at either limit.

It is possible this sheave damage occurred previously with the previous owners and is just simply present. Either way, the new sheave from Shopsmith will have a new bearing.

I cannot encourage you enough to read Bill Mayo’s Headstock Improvement Kit document. It is the best method of adjusting the speed dial and speed control mechanism.

You can get it wrong so knowing how to set it up correctly is essential when you put it back together. Nothing insures that it was right when you acquired it.

Turning everything by hand while things are loose will help you evaluate overall condition of all bearings.
