sheave on motor

I just bought, I hope for a good price, what I believe is a Mark V. The headstock has #351046 on the plate. The belt will turn the motor, kinda, if speed is adjusted right though it is VERY loose, like 2-3 inches loose. The motor doesn't have a sheave, it has a 2 piece pulley. !st 1/2 slides on motor output shaft & tightens with an allen. 2nd 1/2 threads on 1st 1/2, then it tightens with an allen. Motor output shaft is 2" long, is .680 diameter with a keyway full length of .180. There is no keyway or groove on end of shaft to hold any retainer. What have I bought, or need to buy? Thanks. Your serial number would be consistent with a 1950's Mark 5, aka Greenie, I believe. Your motor description, however, would not be consistent with any Mark 5/V. All Mark 5/V's originally have motors with two sheaves, forming a pulley, but the outer sheave is under spring tension to tension the lower belt and adjust for speed. So the shaft should always have a groove near the end for a retainer (snap ring) and is about 4" long.

I believe you have a non-shopsmith motor and pulley. The shaft dimensions do not match. Fortunately ss motor and pulley etc. are often on e-bay.

The original motor for your headstock would have been 3/4 HP, you can confirm that on the plate where you found the Serial Number. The later versions have 1-1/8 HP motors. You can use either one in your Mark 5. Both are often available on eBay as JPG said, and not surprisingly the 1-1/8 HP typically commands a higher price. Opinions will vary but my preference is the 1-1/8, especially if you intend to use the table saw with the now typical 10" blade. The 3/4 will, however, get the job done.

Also when you are looking note that there are SS motors that do not go in the Mark 5/V. The descriptions normally tell you what they are for.

I see that there are other motors and set-ups. Just before buying this SS I bought a, I believe, 10ER. It's belt driven with 3 pulleys to change speed. Then I found something that I thought I could easily change speed on and figured to sell the 1st. Maybe if I just buy 3 or 4 more machines, a bigger shop, and......
