replacement motor has two black wires only

I am replacing a motor on a dead headstock that I have,
the old motor has a green and white wire, the motor I purchased on ebay has two black wires only.

does it matter which wire on the motor connects to the white/black wires on the power cord...

the replacement motor is a Franklin Electric

Does the label on the motor indicate that the motor is "reversible". If it does, simply connect the wires and verify that the motor is rotating in the correct direction. If not, reverse the wires and recheck.

Caveat: I have never seen a motor with only two black wires.

You might also confirm on the label that it is a 115 Volt motor. Some SS motors are 230V. I have never had my hands on a 230V SS motor but many 230V motors I have seen have two black wires for power.

I think you are probably fine then. Later motors follow the black = hot, white = neutral, green = ground standard. I would probably confirm that both wires are isolated from chassis then hook it up without the drive belt and test it. I see a Franklin on ebay and it also looks like two black wires or an extra black sleeve over the wires. The pictures are not the best for seeing this.

If your SS does not have a chassis ground (aka safety ground) you might consider adding it. Requires a three wire power cord. I believe I've read that some early Mark 5's are not grounded.
