You mentioned in another thread that the motor was 3/4 HP, which would usually mean Gilmer style upper belt as opposed to the Poly-V. Can you confirm that? Gross belt misalignment might indicate that either the Drive Sleeve, at the top, or the Idler, is not in the correct position. Of the two, the Idler is more likely. With the belt cover out of the way, visually verify the position of the two. This would be a good time to add some pictures to your post. The idler has an eccentric bushing with a bearing inside it, the left edges of both should be flush with the left edge of the casting. Older headstocks have some variation in how the idler is retained, it is possible yours is simply out of position.

Ok thanks, in my defence my main table is the digital power pro, have never used the older headstock. :)

I slowed it down --- (yes I rotated it while turning the speed down)
yes it does run at slow, but bogs down if I turn the speed up.
looks like something is also out of alignment as it is chewing up the upper belt....

I understood btedeski to mean that he has both a Power Pro and an older model with sheaves. The older model is the one in which he recently replaced the 3/4 hp motor. Now one question is how old is the older model and whether or not it has a gilmer belt or a poly-V belt. I agree - pictures would help!
