If you do decide to turn it on, make sure the speed control is turned way down, like all the way.

But only EVER adjust the speed control with the internals turning. Especially from fast to slow. If you have to adjust it without the motor running, you want to be turning the system by hand and adjust the speed very slowly. Preferred method for manual turning is to turn it with a sanding disc, sandpaper optional, on the main or upper auxiliary spindle.

Otherwise, as you adjust the speed control you are moving, directly or indirectly, sheaves that form variable diameter pulleys. If the pulleys are not turning you will most likely bind the belt (which later will prevent the motor from starting) and put excessive stress on the speed control mechanism. I'm told that mechanism, not coincidentally, has the highest failure rate of anything in the Mark 5/V.

Before plugging it in, inspect the power cord - 40 year old SS cords tend to dry out and crack. Also, don't force the speed control - the lubrication may have dried up. If so, you'll want to go through the lubrication process.
