So I thought it a good day to dig in the tangled mess under my desk and change some connections around. I wanted to change from the local router, an older model, to the newer one located in another room. I had run a pair of cables to the other room previously so that part was just swapping where they plugged in.

The older router will stay as that is one way of isolating traffic and keeping intruders from having access to everything if they manage to get through my web of protection.

I also wanted both cloud drives to be on the same switch so if and when I want to transfer files they will be connected at the highest speed they can (Gigabit). Also have the laptop and main computer on the same switch so things will be as fast as possible.

The local side was disconnection the cables from the router and connecting them to a local switch. The switch would then be connected to the remote router. The remote router then had to be set up for the fixed IP address I use for a few things like my cloud drives and IPprinter that I want to be where they were but just on a different router.

So after hooking everything up I had no internet service at my main computer nor my lap top or the other two computers...... So I started to check where I went wrong with my wiring plan. Made sure all the switch connections when where I though they would, yep that looked right.

Checked the wiring at the modem to make sure the two cables going to the routers were connected, yep.

Traced the two wires from the computer room to the remote room and made sure they were connected where they should be. All looked fine.

That is when I noticed there were no lights on the remote router. When I was moving things around and plugging in cables I must have hit the power switch. Wasted 45 minutes on a problem that wasn't worth but a minute or two of trouble shooting.

Anyway all is well that ends well except sore knees from crawling around but that will go away in a week or so........

Next I can start moving the wireless portion of the net around. Turns out I was up to 29 wireless connections of the old router and it starts to max out at 12. Old router has 450 /1300 the new one has 800/1733 and good for 45 devices.

This will keep me busy for a while.....

Everything I wanted moved is now moved to the new router. I have also added a NAS to the router. The router I have has two USB3 ports so one is now attached to a 2TB drive. I was able to move 23GB off my C: and unload that some. Still have to see of the tablets and phone can see it.... but enough for now. I still have 250GB on the old router which I could either move the contents from and leave the stick there in case I need it sometime or just close that function down and save the parts for another day, no rush to decide.

I also added another switch to the computer room so I can run cables for the new lap top and relocate the print server. Got some shorter lengths of cat 6 cable to clean the rats nest up a bit under the computer table, no use having 15' or even 10' cables under there. Looking forward to seeing how much neater that looks when I get it done.

I may also build a shelf to set the switches on power strips on, that would get things off the floor for cleaning. Have to see if I have the time before winter sets in.
