$60 free standing scroll saw

Post by B-RAD »

I picked up a 1988 shopsmith free standing scroll today with several blades. What upgrades does it need? It does not have a clear cover. It also makes a little screeching noise is that normal?

Any help would be great

I have a scroll saw of similar age. It does not screech so I think you should perform due diligence. A good cleaning is in order. There isn't much to lubricate.

Can you tell anything about where the unwanted noise originates?

A picture or serial number might be helpful to make sure we are attempting to fault isolate the right machine.

Is this like your machine?

or is it like this?

I don't know if there was a "scroll saw" that preceded the gray model depicted in my first link. Can anyone answer that question?

$60 scroll saw

My scroll saw is the gray colored (OCT. of 88 or 89) not the jigsaw. The noise sounds like it coming from under the front of the table (blade area).

Thanks

Hi,

I'd look at the air pump.

Any one want to explain the difference between a 'scrollsaw' and a 'jig saw'????

Scroll/Jig saw

Post by JPG »

Thanks ED! That was my understanding, but with out much input. My history banks recall a hand saw(which used a jigsaw blade) which was a big squarely shaped frame and a handle threaded to tighten the blade...like a deep throat/short hacksaw frame. This we called a scroll saw. I think jig saw is a device to make 'jig saw puzzles'. A scroll saw is used to make scroll work. A sabre saw has a blade attached at one end only.

I think the jig/scroll name implied what it was to be used for, not how it worked.

When SS redesigned the jig saw it was more Politically Correct to call it something else - Hence they called it a scroll saw!!!:(

This description reminds me of a coping saw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coping_saw

While I was there, I looked up fret saw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretsaw Either the fret saw or the coping saw fall into that description, but I wood knot put scroll saw in the same catagory.

I have the same saw and I have the 555706 upgrade kit on it. See here:
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/item ... =Find+Item

I got mine used, table needed a lot of cleaning and pollishing, the air pump needed work, the kit I ordered as soon as I got the saw so I installed it without ever trying it the old way... so I can't tell you how much better it is now but I do know the kit has some advantages just by looking at it.
