Guinevere Sanding System

Post by bainin »

Wondering if anyone has experience with this tool, or with something similar.
I like the idea of it being separate from the SS..though I haven't ruled out getting sanding
cylinders for the SS.

It doesn't provide any form of dust capture-which can be addressed in the shop but you'd think
a design like an RO sander would allow for some level of dust capture.

It is expensive..the full kit is listed around $400.

Id be curious if someone knows of other products like this out there-its the only thing Ive come across.

Alright another question maybe closer to home.

With the rubber barrel sander attachment for shopsmith- is there a concern about applying pressure perpendicular to the quill direction?

Well, we have been doing it for 70+ years with the Shopsmith and people do it all the time with other drill presses so I think there is no problem. Sanding does not apply very much side pressure. You apply side pressure all the time to the quill when you saw or rout. Probably a lot more side pressure than sanding with a drum.

Shopsmiths are designed to take side-loading on the quill.

I’ve heard that you can’t assume that the same is true of a drill press, and also that side-loading a drill chuck is unwise (hence the special router-bit “chucks” for a Shopsmith). But as jsburger points out, a lot of people do use sanding drums on their conventional drill presses. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can weigh in with the why’s and wherefore’s.

I am gonna go out on a limb and say the sanding drums are a constant load whereas a cutting tool has impulse forces side loading.

Most drill press chucks are attached to the spindle with a Jacob's Taper (similar to a Morse Taper), and can break loose if subject to side loading. The Shopsmith drill chuck attaches to the straight spindle with a set screw so that isn't a problem. :)

IIUC the side loading problem with drill chuck is the very small area of contact at only three locations about a mounted cylindrical shaft. Those small contact points are 120° apart. Side thrust pressing the shaft into those 120° gaps is the issue.
