Stuck jointer knives

Post by eddiefroh »

I recently bought a used jointer attachment which doesn't seem to have many miles racked up. However, it's been sitting for some time. I've given it a pretty thorough overhaul, added guards, dust collection retrofit, but can't get the knives out of the spindle. The screws all came out fine, but the shim/knife/spindle seem to be "fused". Any suggestions out there?

Drop the levelling screws down and give the blade a whack with a wooden hammer. Or try raising the blade with the screws.

If this fails give the end of the wedge a sideways tap with a punch.

Stuck jointer knives

Not unusual. I first try backing out the knife leveling screw at either end. Then if it looks like I will strip the knife leveling screw, I turn this screw all the way down and use a flat blade screwdriver to pry/drive under the wedge at either end. I spray KROIL (http://www.kanolabs.com) penetrating oil first and let set for a couple minutes before trying to remove the wedges.

Stuck Knives

Step One: Douse the blade/wedges/screws in kerosene(keep it out of the bearings).

Step Two: Resume activity tomorrow.

Step Three: The two screw heads at the ends of each blade are intended to be used to adjust blade height. They can also be used as 'jacks' to raise blades out of the head.

CAREFUL(they are soft) prying under the wedges can be helpful!

I haven't had any which did not come out using this procedure.

GOOD LUCK!

PPPP.S. It appears it is unanamous except for the 1 day delay /solvent!

When I sharpened my blades, I sprayed some "PB Blaster" on the wedges and slid a flat screwdriver under them to pry, just like Bill suggested above. The wedge was stuck pretty good, and when it let go it was airborn! So watch out! ;) Alec
