Jointer Part Identification

Post by bgeagle »

I am in the process of refurbishing my jointer and I need someone to id the part in the photo below. I also need the parts needed to make the safety guard functional. The only parts I have are shown in the photos as well. The folks at SS said that the parts are not available and I would have to purchase a retrofit kit. Thanks for the help.

You have two options for the Blade Guard. Option 1 is update the Blade Guard with the Jointer Feather Guard Retro-fit Kit P/N 555480. It is a nice upgrade for your Jointer. Option 2 would be to find a used Blade Guard but make sure the parts are all there and the spring action works. Any of the Blade Guards will work from the original Model 4E up to the change to the Feather Guard. The only difference for the original style Blade Guards is the labeling on the 5 versions. Your is the fourth version.

My Jointer which was made in 1979 is the same as yours, just three years older. I added the Jointer Feather Guard Retro-fit Kit and the Jointer Dust Chute Retro-fit Kit (P/N 555077) to it. See links below. It is an addition I really like and highly recommend. The Feather Guard holds the work piece against the fence better than the original guard can. The Dust Chute upgrade also includes a back of the fence guard to cover the cutter head when the fence is moved towards the blade guard. An added measure of safety. Plus you get dust collection. Both upgrades require drilling and tapping but I found it to be an easy process.
