Jointer Fence Repair

Post by Chuckbdivin »

I have a MarkV (510), the fence lock on the jointer has stripped out. The aluminum piece that attaches the fence to the table has a 1/2-20 post with a threaded hole that locks the fence location and angle has pulled out from over tightening over the years. According to the SS jointer repair exploded view I believe it’s #42 which shows that it’s not sold as a separate part but doesn’t show any kind of replacement part. I don’t think that I’m the only one that this has happened to and the jointer is pretty much worthless without the fence. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a replacement for either the whole assembly or the 1/2-20 clamp stud?

First welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. The problem you have is a common one for the Jointer. If you look here on the site under service parts you will first find a listing of the 17 most common parts ordered. The link is below. Item F is the Jointer Quadrant Assembly and #42 in the parts diagram. It only comes as an assembly and includes the internal/external threaded shaft, stop and roll pin. The good news is it is on sale today so you can save a little cash. I do not recommend buying a used one as you cannot tell the condition of the threads and could soon end up with the same problem again. By the way this part is the same in all Shopsmith/Manga 4" Jointers.

Welcome. Note that Shopsmith's sales, like this one, typically only last a few days. They put different products on sale every few days. This particular sale on top maintenance parts is good through 4/1 and it just started.

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. I inherited my Shopsmith from my wife’s grandfather a few years ago and I’m just now getting a chance to give it a little love and knowing that it’s 40+ years old it’s in pretty good condition. I hav3 also found another issue that maybe one of you can assist me with, I’ve looked into oiling the sheeves but the videos that I’ve found show that I need to put a couple of drops of oil into holes in sleeve on the end of the sheeves but mine doesn’t have any holes. I have tried running the sheeves in and out (adjust the speed) and just can’t find @ny holes, I did oil the ends of them so I know that there’s some oil there, I just want to make sure that I keep on top of things.

It is a good idea to have an understanding of the history and configuration of your machine because of variations over the years. I'd start by looking for the headstock Serial Number of adding some pictures to a thread and asking folks here. You've mentioned it is a 510, 40+ years old, and no oil holes. That data conflicts a bit unless, as JPG mentioned, it is an early Greenie (mid-50's, so 60+ years old) upgraded to a 510 (anytime after mid-80's). The S/N can be found either stamped into the vent plate if it is older or on a sticker somewhere on the belt cover. The S/N is a date code on newer versions, so technically not a S/N at all. I would add the oil holes if not present, it's not a huge job.

Note - S/Ns are not definitive either, they are on a replaceable part. It's a starting place.

The oil hole on the sheaves can be a little hard to find. The one on the motor is under the spring. The one on the Idler Shaft is on the back side and is accessible through the logo cover on the back side of the headstock. The early Greenie Mark 5's with the "A" Headstock do not have an access hole behind the logo plate. They are only on the part of the sheave that moves in and out from the fixed sheave on each shaft. Once found it can be helpful for future maintenance to mark on the sheave where the hole is. I used a black permanent marker on the sheave's back.

As already stated pictures can help a lot in identifying problems.
