What makes a saw arbor a saw arbor?????

I got a Freud 8" dado 5/8 arbor (D208M) for Christmas. Which arbor would be the best to use??

505506 Same arbor for DADO or MOLDER(if you insist on having one).

I would like any one who knows what the advantage is of a separate arbor with the molder to enlighten us.

I have to have an arbor for my molding head. I don't have a shopsmith molding head as I owned this one before I got a shopsmith back in 1976.... This the one that Sears sold way back when:

So as you can see not all molding heads are the same.

I am NOT a molder expert so I will pose this response in the form of a question:

On the Mk 5 510/520 - Does mounting the molder head on the arbor, with the proper spacer, (as opposed to directly to the quill) allow the owner to use the lower saw guard for safety and dust collection?

Guard? What's that? My SS came without one. It was available as an add on. I never had a need for one. It seemed they would be 'in the way'(sort of like seat belts...if you NEED to move in a hurry, forget it).

You raise a good point though, but how can NO extra hardware get in the way???:D

The second link answers the "do you really NEED an arbor for a molder 'head'" question. SS says NO!.

Actually, it states you DO need an arbor to fit the Mark V. So, I'm still confused.

It offers a ball and setscrew alignment system that automatically positions the knives and locks them in place. Mounts to any 5/8-inch spindle on table saws with a maximum of 4,000 rpm, or to a 5/8-inch Molder/Dado Arbor for use on the Shopsmith MARK V.

Which leaves me still wondering if the new molders do not have the set screw or if it a spacing issue for the 510, 520.

OK! I reread it. I was considering that the SS was indeed = "saw arbor with 5/8* spindle......!

That leaves your last question the relevant mystery. WHY???? Spacing??

If the set screw were left out of NEW molder heads, it could not be used on "saw arbor ....".

The Shopsmith molder head cannot be mounted to a 5/8" Shopsmith saw arbor because the 5/8" shaft on the saw arbor is too short (or the molder head is too thick). There are photos of the arbors linked earlier in this thread for reference.

I QUOTE Item No. 505553 How to use the SHOPSMITH MOLDING HEAD Page 3

"MOUNTING THE MOLDING HEAD

The molding head can be secured directly to the spindle or it can be mounted on a 5/8" arbor."

It then goes into detail for each option(spindle/arbor).

In the arbor instruction it mentions the undercut washers and that they should be mounted with the undercut sides toward the molder head.

AS far as the 'thickness' is concerned, my molder head is 7/8" thick and my spindle shaft is 1 1/8".


NO ONE has suggested mounting it on a 5/8" SAW arbor...The arbor in question here is SS 505506 Molder/Dado:rolleyes: arbor. It can be seen in Perryobear's 4th & 5th pix.

This confusion about WHAT arbor to use WHEN and WITH WHAT is the reason behind my starting this thread.

I appreciate the suggestion to JUST GET THE ONE SS SAYS TO GET, however us engineer types have to ALWAYS understand things for themselves and I do not consider that a bad trait. That being said, there is a world of folks out there who don't care as long as whatever works and do not mind being dependent on someone else telling them what/when to do things.........Happy Valentines DAY:D
