If you are drilling through thin metal, try using step bits,
Great advice. I don't have any of those. Also, I was drilling through about 1 inch stock. I haven't seen a step bit for that kind of thickness. Unrelated to this project, I needed a 9/16 and was trying to avoid paying $21 to drill one hole, so I considered the step bit, but couldn't find one where the 9/16 section was at least 1/2 inch at local Lowes, HD, etc.
Just FYI, for this project I was making a homemade miter stop using 1/4 inch rod, and an aluminum block with 1/4 thru holes, and 17/64 inch tapped to 5/16 for set screws.
Thanks, Mike
