$60 scroll

My $60 freestanding scroll saw I picked up last weekend makes a screeching noise towards the back of the unit. Is this noise normal? What should a scroll saw sound like?

I think you ask this before and I told you to look at the air pump. Did you try that? The sound you are hearing is most likely from that. The rod of the pump is rubbing on the plastic and making the noise. If that is not the case then we can go on but that is the place to start. You should also check the leather in the pump it will no doubt be dry as a bone.

I did add oil to the pump under a plastic disk. I let it soak for 24 hrs with no change.

Hi,

Did you check the rod and see if it is rubbing on the plastic disk? The sound can be from that alone. If you look at it while it is running (tilt the table) you can put a dowel on the disk to see if it effects the noise.

You will most likely have to take the pump apart unless you are lucky and the previous owner kept it oiled and the machine didn't set unused for too long. The only way to know how it is working is to check the air flow... which you might not want to do until you get rid of the noise.

I don't have the stand alone model but I know it is driven by a round rubber belt and I guess that might we something needing replacing... no idea what sounds that would make if it were loose.

I cannot think of ANY machine which 'NORMALLY MAKES A SCREECHING SOUND" while running. You need to determine the source of the screeching. Check all parts that are moving.. this may require some disassembly/removal of covers etc. Manually rotate the input shaft while observing what parts are moving and if abnormal resistance is felt at the input shaft. You may need to disconnect some pieces to isolate the problem. I would check the condition/functioning of all bearings first.

I was able to play in the garage for a 1/2 hour today. I turned the scroll saw over and found the pulley guard was rubbing on the pulley. I made a few quick adjustments and no more screeching noise. I was very happy the air pump even started working.
