Nova threaded chuck.

Post by TomMac »

Hey guys and gals, I'm new to the forum, I'm new to Shopsmiths, but not new to woodworking. I bought a Mark V and sold off my old lathe. I kept all the chucks and everything from it.
My problem is that my Nova wont fit my shopsmith. I have tried to research it some and cant find exactly what I need.
Maybe there is a threaded adaptor that goes between the spindle and the chuck? I don't know but any help would be awesome.

I have a feeling I'll be dipping into the wealth of knowledge that's on this site.

Thanks again,
Tom

Nova makes an insert for their chucks to the SS 5/8" spindle. Just about any place that sells Nova chucks can order the adapter for you. If you have a direct thread chuck, one that does not take an insert, then you will need to find an adapter from plain 5/8" plain bore to whatever threads the chuck has. There are companies that make adapters for various different thread sizes.

wow, I think its 5/8 thread size JPG. I went to that link and did a little research. I was surprised to find that the proper adaptor is available through my local Home Depot!
So I ordered it and it should be here in a few days. I'll be looking forward to it. I have a giant piece of red oak, and another of poplar, that I am going to do bowls and a platter out of.

Thanks again!

I found the info on line but it could be wrong. I think there were different threads on different chucks. Some chucks were designed to direct thread on certain lathes. I know that Nova makes a 1 -8 reversible G3 chuck for direct thread onto a lathe. I think even the insert style now is larger than a 1 1/4 - 8, just by looking at my chuck. I originally thought the insert style was a metric thread size but could not find any other info about the thread size in a quick search online.

Apparently it has changed from time to time or differences between models. Currently Teknatool lists it as 1" - 8 TPI Direct Thread for the Nova G3. That is from their website today. I bought my Nova G3 a few years ago and it has 1-1/2" diameter threads. I also bought the Shopsmith adapter with it at the same time. There is a Nova G3 Woodturning Chuck – INSERT TYPE listed on their website that I can't find the thread size of but looks like it is the same as my G3. Other Teknatool Chucks currently have different thread sizes. The Supernova 2 and the Nova Titan III has 1-1/4" threads.

TomMac which Nova Chuck do you have?

I spent some more time looking around the Nova website and found the insert style chuck is a M38-3.5. They also make chucks with a 1-8 and 1 1/4-8 female threads. https://teknatool.freshdesk.com/support ... read-size-
