Re-gasketing the Dust Collector

I still wonder how much more airflow, if any, this upgrade gives over the original blower design. I saw a video on FB for someone who did the upgrade, but the 42" filter hood didn't inflate anymore than my DC-3300 does, i.e. it doesn't fully inflate like it should leaving part of the filter hood collapsed (see video at link below). In fact, I think my stock DC-3300 inflates the 42" filter hood more than shown in this video:

I can't view the video for comparison to mine. I get a FB message indicating the content is not available. It's a great question, perhaps better in the tool review thread. (But I don't think perspective buyers are likely to read a 30 page tool review either. ) I Don't know of anyone planning to do an objective review with correct instrumentation.

Got her done. If there are any leaks left they are small ones. I'll have to make a bag full of saw dust and then check to know for sure.

I sealed leaks even where I don't believe there here any.

I still had the large gaping hole across the top of the Motor Housing but it is now effectively sealed.

I mounted the 4" coupler tightly to the Manifold then installed it AFTER I had Mounted the Motor and Fan Housings. This was a lot easier than trying to work the entire assembly into the top of the DC. It also gives me a much better connection of the coupler to the Manifold (eliminates a leak potential).

It might improve things if the coupler was 5" long (maybe 4 1/2) but it ain't. If it leaks. I'll tape it where it interfaces with the Fan Housing.

If I only had a dust bag that fit the Main Housing properly. Why does Shopsmith push these grossly over size bags. Somebody suggested using 13" Heftys but they are just a little bit too small.

That does not look right to me, but I don't have any photos of mine when it was assembled and 'working.' Are those blast gates open? I'd be thinking: bigger leak than I had between + pressure and atmospheric, or a pretty big recirculation leak between + and - pressure, issue with motor performance, etc.

Yeah, that was my initial thought as well, which is why I think the issues that you and Dusty have brought up here about the upgrade are so valuable. Unfortunately, I think only a handful of people purchased this upgrade, or the new DC-6000, so until it becomes more popular it may be difficult to validate your findings because the sample size is so small.

I might have a solution to the oversized bags. After I first got my DC3300 I accidentally ordered the DC330L bags; when I went to install my first bag I found it was too tight to fit, I just could not get it onto the housing. I had read about other’s experience of the bags being too loose so at first I wasn’t sure what was going on. It took a minute to figure out that I just had the wrong bags. But I did end up getting the bag work though, and I think it might be easier to install than using the correct bags. All I had to do was stretch the bag just a little bit, all around the top couple of inches, or so, and the bag was easy to fit snugly in place, without using the metal clips. Afterwards, it was easy to tighten the clamp on the bag, since I didn’t need to struggle to hold the bag in place. It seems to fit perfectly.

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve looked for the DC6000 upgrade in the online catalog and haven’t been able to find it listed. That could be one reason few have purchased it. There could be several reasons that don’t have it listed; for instance, lack of available parts, or making modifications to fix newly discovered issues with the design.

This is not an endorsement, but if you put 557092 in the Search you will find the listing for the upgrade. It appears to be available. Again, not an endorsement.

At this point I have no need for the upgrade, I was using a shopvac until MickyD gave me the DC3300 a couple of months ago, so I’m just happy to have it. I’ve been following these threads on the DC6000 and the upgrade and was just looking to see how ShopSmith has been marketing the upgrade. Surprised to find that they haven’t had the upgrade listed in the online catalog.

I think early purchasers were the Beta testers.
