This last weekend Iwe purchased a new fridge and washer machine and since the utility room is in the garage/shop I had to clear some room to get the old out and put in the new. Now my shop is a bit more organized. When your shop is a 12' x 24' garage that also houses the washer and dryer, hotwater tank and heater you have to get creative. I built a loft above half the garage that has about a 2' high storage space. As far as flickering lights go I work at a school and when they built the school that I am at now (13 years ago) all the lights flickered. The electrical contractor went back in and replaced all the ballast. The old ballast were made in Mexico and they felt like they weighed only a couple of ounces and the new ones a few pounds. Since then I have been replacing ballast with the ones that accept the t-8 bulbs (smaller diameter more efficient). I installed a fixture in my shop with the same type.

paulmcohen - - I'd tell you, but can't spell it> Had the same problem for a couple of hours when visiting Michigan a few years back. U. P. = Upper Peninsula -- The Part of Michigan caught between the big wolf head lake (Superior, I think) and Lake Mich.

Incidentally PTWFE refers to "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone" - - the hard bound book that comes with a SS purchase from SS.

Hi,

Just a comment about the U.P. If you're interested take a look at:
http://www.geocities.com/lukefisk.geo/upfacts.html

My wife is a yooper and we spend about 45 days a year there...... and of course we love it! Loper is the term for those not from the UP who are un-lucky enought to live in the rest of MI. If you are up that way make sure you stop in far a couple of pasties.....

Say yah to da U.P., eh!

Paul:

Do you really want to get me started on the U.P? Well you asked for it – here
Goes……….

The Upper Peninsula is technically a part of Michigan. However, once you cross the Mackinaw Bridge (and this is quite an experience), the U.P. ain't nothing at all like downstate.

With 17,000 sq miles, the U.P. is larger than 9 states. One half of the land mass is State and National Forest. With 315,000 residents the population density is about the same as Idaho. With abundant wildlife and forest ......O my......now you've really got me started......where was I......O yes...the U.P. is a lot like a Western state, except we have so much water it's almost sinful; lakes, streams, 200 waterfalls, including the Tahquanamon Falls which is the number two waterfall East of the Mississippi, and hundreds of miles of shoreline on Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan.

Let me catch my breath........To grasp the vastness of the U.P. picture the distance from Columbus Ohio to St. Louis, MO. That's just about the length of the U.P. Get this, the largest town, Marquette, has only 19,000 people. Also unlike many of the Western states, the basic infrastructure in the U.P. is quite good; ie: roads, electricity, telephone, medical care, there are even three State Universities (not branches) and a community college system……..I’m going on and on……my goodness…….Again, also unlike the Rocky Mountain States, the U.P. has not been “discovered” by the Hollywood and other trendy types (ugh) who have jacked up Western acreage to astronomical price levels – they don’t even know the U.P. exists. We want to keep it that way!

If you’re an outdoorsman, there is hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, grouse, waterfowl, coyotes, foxes, and bobcats, there are even moose and wolves although they are not hunted. Fishermen have a choice of trout, bass, walleye, salmon, lake trout, panfish…….much of this I enjoy just by walking out the door or driving just a couple of miles.

If you are into Winter sports there is not a better snowmobiling place in the USA. The ski areas generally have better powder than Vail or Steamboat and cost far less. Ice fishing for Walleye in the Big and Little Bay-De-Noc bays is very popular.

The woodworker is really in heaven. There are abundant quantities of White and Red Pine, Cherry, Maple, Birch, Beach, Ash, and others. There are a lot of small sawmills – prices are very reasonable - logging is everywhere.

Now you know far more than you NEVER wanted to know about the U.P. I can hardly wait to get on I 75 and head North.

U. P. = Upper Peninsula would have been enough but the descriptions were wonderful.

Thanks everyone.

P.S. I found out you need to replace florescent lights in pairs (or at least not leave some out). Once I put in all the bulbs the lights worked corectly.

Just to return to the "What I did last weekend" theme for a moment, so I can brag on my students:

I attended the Ohio Technology Educators Association (OTEA) annual meeting in Worthington, Ohio. I was there on behalf of Russia Local Schools, where I volunteer a few hours each week to help kids build airplanes -- one the the educational programs that Shopsmith supports. Marcus Petitjean, the Technology Instructor in Russia, Ohio, and I set up the second flying Wright aircraft to be completed by Russia students, the 1900 Wright Glider. This was the Wright brothers' first attempt at building a man-carrying flying machine.

The kids completed the replica last spring, using Shopsmith-donated equipment. We have been flying it and showing it off for the better part of a year, but this was the first time we've entered it in an educational competition with projects from other schools. The Russia kids walked away with first place in category, Best of Show, and special a citation for craftsmanship. In their own vernacular, they kicked ass. There was nothing left of the competition but a few smoking CAD printouts and melted Leggo models.

If any of you would like see this historic replica, we'll next show it at the April Inventory Sale at the Shopsmith Factory in Dayton, Ohio. In fact we're bringing the not only the 1900 Wright Glider, but also the 1902 Wright Glider (the first aircraft the Russia kids completed) and parts of the 1909 Wright-Clarke Glider (the aircraft they're building now; a replica of the world's first flight trainer.)

With all good wishes,

April 20 and 21, Friday and Saturday. I'll be giving two free seminars each day. They just asked me for a photo of my smiling mug to help promote the sale, so I'm going to guess that those of you who live within driving distance of Dayton, Ohio will be seeing an e-mail from Shopsmith with some very scary graphics sometime in the near future.

With all good wishes,
