I use CAD in my engineering work and also on my household projects. Unless a project is really simple, I prefer to "build it on paper" first, before I cut material. With drawings in hand, I can pay full attention to the cutting and not the designing. Safer.
Like others on this forum, I have made some CAD models of certain components of my Mark V. These models are useful when designing templates and holding tools that must interface with the machine. I can then design the tool "on the machine" and when the tool is built it fits and works with no surprises - usually.
Attached is a 3D PDF of my Mark V CAD model. It's neat. I have it modeled using very simple geometry, and if I was more ambitious I would model in greater detail. It takes a lot of time to "reverse-engineer" something like a Shopsmith in each and every detail. I use enough detail to get by, but more detail is better.
I wish Shopsmith would provide CAD models of at least some of the Mark V components such as the main table. I have not asked them. They may think the Shopsmith is still a proprietary design after decades on the market!
Many industrial companies will provide CAD models of their products. McMaster-Carr is very good in this regard. Such models are invaluable to machinery designers and others. I will be more likely to buy your gizmo if I can verify (with a CAD model) that it fits my application.
I worked at a drawing board for years, so my transition to CAD was fairly easy. I never looked back. CAD is amazing. Some guys, and some companies, never made the transition. My CAD software is SolidWorks. That matters because different CAD platforms do not talk well with each other.
Does anyone here know what CAD platform Shopsmith uses? If any? Or are they still on the drawing board???

Allright, here's a screenshot of the CAD model.
PDF works on my PC. Maybe you have to copy the file over, I don't often use 3D PDF's and have no idea why it does not work.

I don't have CAD and there are many things I cannot do with Sketchup but I am slowly getting there.SteveMaryland wrote: Sun Dec 12, 2021 7:25 pm Allright, here's a screenshot of the CAD model.
