My 10e
This is my 10e. It has a cast iron main table ( salvaged from on old craftsman). The original had been damaged from previous owner. The ways were cut down to about 34” due due space requirements in my utility room. The headrest is mounted on hinges so I just remove belt to swing it over for drill press mode. I’m still able to use it for all functions even though it was cut down in length. Any recommendations are appreciated. (I do have two full length way tubes if I ever move to a bigger place)

Oh my! A 10er shorty. I hope the reason you have another set of model 10 way tubes is that you cut a pair of M5/MV tubes.
Nice!!!
P.S. If you did cut 18" off a pair of model 10 tubes, what did you do with the cutoffs?

I still have the original tubes. The short tubes I got from another seller ( don’t know what model they were from).

Re: My 10e
Stex10er,
First off welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. Nice Model 10E shorty. I believe this is the first Shorty Model 10 I have seen. I do like the way you added extra length having the belt past the headrest. A very creative way of mounting the Headrest to clear it out of the way to put your 10E into Drill Press mode. I am curious as to why you adapted a Craftsman table instead of getting a replacement. A lot of used parts are available around from sellers that buy tools to sell the individual parts online.
For anyone thinking of making a Model 10 shorty for themselves I have a couple of suggestions. First as JPG was asking about, use Way Tubes from a Mark V. They both start out as the same length but the Mark V and even the late Model 10ER Way Tubes are thinner walled than the original Way Tubes of the Model 10E and 10ER. The thicker walled tubes are not made any more and are better left uncut. The thinner walled Way Tubes will be plenty strong enough especially since they will be shorter and as a plus are still being made.
Another consideration would be using the shorter base and 2 bolt headrest from a later Model 10ER. This will save 3" of needed length in mounting them on a bench. The Model 10E and the early Model 10ER used a 60" long bench while the later Model 10ER, after the change to the base and headrest, used a 57" long bench as their standard lengths.

Re: My 10e
The craftsman top was given to me by a friend who was going to sell it for scrap. And all I had to do is use 1/4”
Plate for the the difference in mounting bolt location . I’ll eventually get a replacement top but for now it works great. (Even cuts down any vibration due to the extra weight).

Re: My 10e
On a side note. If any one could help me on production date? The tag says model 10e but serial number is ER10611
Re: My 10e
Follow this link to a page leading to a lot of great technical info. Clink on the red My Google Drive link and look for the 10E & 10ER folder. A file in there titled 10ER Survey by Serial... contains a lot of information about the serial numbers and feature of those models. According to the document yours was made before 1949.

Re: My 10e
Those 10E's were really built like tanks. I have not used or handled one but judging from other people on this Forum the 10E still works well even by today's standards.
I notice the Link-Belt used on the drive. Link-Belt was (is?) used on many industrial machines. It can be assembled in the field to any length, and it can be installed on any v-belt drive without taking anything apart. Maybe a useful item to carry in the car in case of a belt failure.
Which leads me to a question: has anyone here tried using a Link-Belt in on the SS Mark V drive?
