drilling oiling holes in control sheave or sheaves?

Post by timsch »

I need to add oil holes in my control sheave for lubrication. I understand that the one that is moved in and out will need it, but I just read another post that indicated that both sheaves need it. I thought the other was stationary other than rotation.

So, how many holes need to be drilled, and what locations. I know I've seen this info before, but can't seem to find it now. thanks for the help

The oil holes only need to be drilled in the sheaves that move along the length of the shafts. One is on the motor sheave and the other is on the control sheave. Drill the hole near the hub of the sheave. About 1/8 inch hole will do the job. The speed has to be set in the high speed position to find the hole which is covered by the spring on the motor. You should be able to get a Zoom Spout oiler from most well stocked hardware stores so you can reach the holes. The oil should be 10W non detergent oil. More instruction is available in the Shopsmith manual.

Thanks Bill. I see now. I wasn't thinking about the motor sheaves.

The later OEM versions are a 3/16" hole directly opposite the keyway. Very near the sheave as Bill said, I'd estimate ~1/8" between the edge of the hole and the sheave. It is worthwhile to check the bore for excessive wear on these older machines, the floating sheave on my Greenie is well past its "Use by" date.

When looking for wear indication, closely examine the keyway for width increasing at the end on the hub.
