Tax Refund

Post by jsburger »

Our CPA electronically filed our taxes on 22 Feb and they were accepted by the IRS the same day. The refund was in my bank account this morning. Exactly one week to the day. Last year it took just over two weeks.

That socks. I am still waiting for 2020 tax return to be processed. They have processed my payment though.

I understand that you aren't the only one waiting for them to finish up your 2020 return, Dusty. Just last week I read a new article stating that the IRS still had many thousands of 2020 returns waiting to be processed. Now they are getting flooded by 2021 returns on top of that.
I figure it should take about 2 more years until their backlog is so great that they never catch up. At that point, we all should be able to stop filing and they will never know it because they won't be able to see past their pile of unfinished work to know who has filed and who hasn't.

Mine was fast too. I submitted it on the evening of Feb 11th, in my account just after midnight on the 18th.

Last year submitted on Feb 18th but refund did not arrive until May 5th.

I guess I am very naive about this. It has been a while since we have owed federal tax. I always owe state. I send a check and it clears the bank and I am done. I have no idea if any data base shows they have or have not "processed" my return. I don't care. They accepted my check so the taxes are paid.

How do you check if your return has been "processed"? As I said above our CPA files the return electronically and sends me an email that it was filed and the IRS has accepted it. That is all I care about.

What makes you think they haven't processed you return. As you said they did the part they care about getting your money. I guess if they cashed your payment who cares?

I have logged into IRS.GOV and there I can see exactly what the status of my tax return is. At this time, my 2020 tax return has not yet been processed. It is pending some where in the system.

They accepted my check too but the IRS.GOV website still has my return "in process". It has not yet been accepted. In fact, I received a letter about two months ago from the IRS office saying that my return had not been received but if I had already filed please send them a copy of all supporting documents. That was done the very same day; returned via registered mail. No green card back on that either.

Now I am ready to file my 2021 taxes but I am holding it for awhile.

I recall back around '07 when my accountant asked me what I wanted to do with my tax refund. I replied "My what now?". I hadn't got anything back from the government for many years, insignificant amounts back then, and tax time had come to mean finding out how much I still owed. Kinda nice to get something back.

That seems a bit strange. They want supporting documents for something they say they don't have.
