Horizontal Boring on a Shopsmith Mark V (Sorry, I don't have time to record a short video!)

My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood

SHOP NOTES: A horizontal boring machine is one of those tools that few woodworkers even consider because, with the exception of the Shopsmith Mark V, most other options are large and expensive dedicated tools. Any time I am drilling into the edge of a board for joinery I always go to this simple set-up.

💡 Here's an idea: If you aren't ready or able to join the channel, you can always support the channel by watching, clicking the thumbs-up, commenting, sharing, and by clicking through the provided links whenever you are shopping on Amazon or eBay. You don't even need to purchase the items these links lead to, but by going through these links they'll reward us with a small "finders fee". Thanks in advance for the support!

🟢 I've created an Amazon list of many of the tools that I have found to be indispensable in my shop. http://a.co/0GLhuR2 You may have to click the "Filter" link to show the items in the list. I suggest sorting them by priority.

0:00 - Intro: Why you might need a surface sander
1:26 - Changing over the Mark V from sawing to horizontal boring
3:00 - Do we even need dowels?
3:35 - Locate the center of the stock
4:49 - CRITICAL TIPS!
7:15 - Using Dowel Centers
11:08 - Boring and joining end grain

Products used or discussed in this video (in no particular order):
🟢 WAY BETTER Dowel Centers from Amazon: https://amzn.to/37p5gI1
🟢 Gauge from Amazon: https://amzn.to/346jdbE
🟢 Here's a link to the dowel forming tool I own and use, available on eBay: https://ebay.to/3lWHXcg
🟢 I've searched for quite a while to find a comfortable apron and have been really happy with this one: https://amzn.to/2IRhONZ And yes, Amazon did use a photo of me in the apron!
