Looking for Black Ironwood that grows in FL

Post by TurkeyWood »

Hi folks. New here. I’m on the hunt for blanks of the heaviest wood in N. America, black ironwood. It grows in South Florida and in and around the Caribbean. Anyone heard of this wood before or know someone selling blanks?

Never heard of Black ironwood. I have heard of Iron wood. About 20 years ago a bridge here in Tampa was being redone the walkway was made from Iron Wood. They offered the wood to the Wood Workers club I belonged to at the time. From what I remember they issued very strong cautions about the wood. It is very poisonous and a splinter and/or dust from it can make your life miserable. I think most of the club members passed on it since it was so dangerous. Plus I think it contains sand particles which will dull any tool very quickly. As I recall the wood is not very good looking but has one desirable trait, it is very tough and takes forever for it to rot.

Depending on where you are and how much you need , if you are in FL check a local mill or private mill { local farm } in the area , if they dont have any maybe they can direct you to a mill that does , this is how it works around here . EBAY list small blanks from time to time .

According to the wood database it barely grows larger than a shrub. As such it is not harvested commercially.

Desert Ironwood is similar and is available commercially.
