tketzer1,

The information in the topic How to Post a Picture in the Community Section at the link below may help you better understand picture posting on this site. Some of the information is older. I use the Paint 3D program to resize pictures generally to 1000 pixels for the longest dimension just to make it easier for myself. Most of the pictures we take these days are with our phone cameras which are a much larger file size than this site accepts.

You asked a question about the Jig Saw we didn't answer yet. In your second post you asked
I am still not understanding the jigsaw unit, if you use a jigsaw blade are you only securing it to the bottom chuck or is a 5-inch blade long enough to lock it in to the upeer chuck as well?
The full answer is both. Normally for Jig Saw work you will use 5" plain end blades attached to both the lower and upper chucks. It can be used as a Saber Saw for cutting larger pieces of stock without the upper arm attached and a saber saw blade in the lower chuck. This is shown on page 6 of the Jig Saw Manual from my earlier post. As I said in that post the Manual is for the earlier Jig Saw and I see from your pictures you have the later version. Again not a problem. I am wondering from the picture of your Jig Saw is the Gear Box Cover on it where indicated by the arrow?

I cannot tell for sure.

In the pictures you posted of parts there are some you may not be sure of. In your picture below I have numbered some of the less common parts to identify for you.

1 are 3 Shaper Cutters, they mount on the Shaper Arbor # 5 below for use.
2 are the chipper blades for a Dado Blade set and the 2 outside blades are not there.
3 is a Jointer Cutter Head to be used with the Jointer-Shaper Fence shown in the picture below.
4 is a Mortising Chisel used with the Mortising Attachment in the picture below.
5 is a Shaper Arbor but the spacer on it I believe is the spacer used when mounting the Jig Saw without the upper arm. It is part 134-21 from the manual.
6 is the Jig Saw Mounting Bolt

The items not identified in the picture above for anyone reading this and are not familiar with the Shopsmith Tools and accessories they are the Drill Chuck with Key, Lathe Tailstock Dead Center, Lathe Drive and 5/8" Arbor which is missing 1 of the 2 Machined Washers.

I already mentioned the picture below and I identified the less common parts in it.

The circled item looks like a guide for a handheld power tool. Maybe a Circular Saw or Jig/Saber Saw cutting guide. Sorry I have no clue on the unidentified item.

The items not identified in the picture above are the 12" Sanding Disk, Upper Saw Blade Guard with splitter and the Lathe Tool Rest Assembly.

I cannot tell for sure from the pictures which Headstock version you have but it is either 4 or 5 and your Model 10ER was made prior to April 1951.

tketzer1,

I just read your question in the other thread. I am answering it here since it is easier to keep the information for your Shopsmith in one place. It will be easier to find later than having to search multiple threads for past information. As has been already said there isn't any information listing dates when specific serial numbers were made. There were for some time two different sets of serial numbers being used when the Shopsmith Model 10's were being made. For a long time after the Eastern Plant started production, both plants used serial numbers with a prefix. The original Western Plant began adding an "R" prefix to serial numbers while the Eastern Plant used first an "E" prefix than an "ER" prefix. One change we know is the change from double Wedge Locks to single Wedge Locks which occurred in April 1951. For the Eastern Plant that change began with serial number ER40908 and for the Western Plant it was serial number R53198. Your serial number 37242 should have a prefix with it. If it has an "ER" prefix it would have likely been made in later 1950 and if it has an "R" prefix than likely early 1950. These are of course best guestimates.

As I said in my last post
One change we know is the change from double Wedge Locks to single Wedge Locks which occurred in April 1951. For the Eastern Plant that change began with serial number ER40908 and for the Western Plant it was serial number R53198. Your serial number 37242 should have a prefix with it. If it has an "ER" prefix it would have likely been made in later 1950 and if it has an "R" prefix than likely early 1950. These are of course best guestimates.
Since your Model 10ER has the serial number ER 37242 I would guestimate December 1950 or January 1951 at the latest. During that time there was approximately 2000 Model 10ER's being made per month at the two plants. Your Model 10ER was 3666 Model 10ER's before the change in April 1951 and at about a thousand units per month from the Eastern Plant (the other 1000 units from the Western Plant) makes it most likely December 1950.

Did you get the original Owner's Guide with your Model 10ER? That may also have a clue as to when it was made. For December 1950 it would have an Owner's Guide with a Copyright 1950 on the lower left corner of the front cover and 160-1ER-1050 on the lower right corner of the back cover. For January 1951 it would have an Owner's Guide with a Copyright 1951 on the lower left corner of the front cover and 160-1ER-0151 on the lower right corner of the back cover.
