10ER w/ speed control - sell or keep? Small humid NJ garage.

Post by Tpmcguire »

I was just giving a free shop fox drill press so now the 10 ER is primary use is for my wife to turn things. I have taken the headstock off, cleaned the way tubes and inside the head stock but this thing still gets stuck. It’s so bad she hast to use ratchet straps to move it and it’s very frustrating for her.

being that I was just offered a full-size Jet lathe for $50. I’m pretty sure the answer is clear to just sell this. Does anybody have any reason that I should keep it? How much do you think this would go for with the drill press, disc sander and tablesaw attachments.

You could consider doing some PM on the wedge locks.

I’m in Middletown, NJ.

I cleaned the locks and it feels like they free up.

The cash in hand may be more valuable than the floor space it takes up if I have other dedicated tools.

Tpmcguire,

You asked,
Does anybody have any reason that I should keep it?
This is not to knock the stand-alone tools but there are things you can do with a Shopsmith that you cannot do on stand-alone tools. As an example, on your average drill press a small worktable rotates left or right but the Shopsmith's larger table at 14 1/2" x 17" tilts forward from 0 to 90 degrees. You can drill multiple holes at an angle perfectly in line without changing your setup. Just slide the work piece left or right along the fence to each spot. You can even drill a compound hole by tilting the table left or right. The Drill press has up to 27" between the chuck and table or 55" between the chuck and floor. Besides getting a great Drill Press you get a Horizontal Boring Machine (drill press laying down) with unlimited length for drilling into stock. That is one of the examples I put in my ads when selling Model 10's I have restored.

We could fill a book here with all the things you can do with a Shopsmith but instead I would suggest reading the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. A PDF version of the 1st edition featuring the Model 10ER is available on Everett's My Google Drive at the link below. It may have you seeing the Shopsmith differently and help you decide about selling it.

If you do keep it, we can help with any questions you may come up with.
