Do you know if there is any way to identify if the candidate replacement quill assembly is one of the earliest models that you refer to?

If you buy new from SS you'll get the version described above in this thread, both bearings are replaceable. Of the other two versions I know about, they are outwardly identical as far as I know. The difference is on one the two-piece spindle is held together with a roll (aka spring tension) pin and can be easily separated for bearing service.
