Thanks David,
That narrows down when the Belt Cover Shaft Guard was added to the Belt Cover and that it was not done at the same time as the Date Code Sticker was moved. So, the change is sometime between your 2004 Mark and my April 2006 Mark.
For anyone interested and not sure of what we are discussing here the picture below shows the holes on the Belt Cover for mounting the Belt Cover Shaft Guard. They are threaded holes.

Below is a picture of the Shaft Guard in place.

nduanetesh,
br549 and JPG have answered the paint and oil questions. Even though it is a bit expensive when compared to off the shelf spray paints, I recommend getting the Touch Up Paint from Shopsmith. I have used both the pre and post November 1, 2001 formulas on different Mark tools with great success. You should be able to find the Zoom Spout Oiler locally with oil. It is usually about $5. Another option I have used is the Pocket Oiler that Shopsmith sells and also includes in their Help Kit. Because of its small diameter the needle end of the Pocket Oiler is easier to get in-between the spring for oiling the Motor Sheave. The Zoom Spout Oiler has a longer reach. Use whichever way you can get oil into the sheaves to keep them lubricated and your Mark V working smoothly on those speed changes. Of course, if you do upgrade to the Power Pro Headstock, as you have indicated you are interested in, you eliminate the need for lubricating those parts inside the Headstock.

Re: Which to choose...?
Thanks. I've done a ton of browsing the Shopsmith website and hadn't seen that they sell the touch up paint. The website is so poorly organized--I'm really forward to the new site they've said is coming soon.
I've been binging Youtube videos from My Growth Rings in my downtime, and learning quite a lot. The host, Scott, has a great way of presenting information and pointing out common pitfalls while keeping things interesting.
I just placed an order for the manual(s) I'm missing, the band saw table, and touch up paint. I had planned to wait to see if there was a Black Friday deal, but my eagerness let me talk myself into these being items that were unlikely to go on sale.

Another good video resource, at least to me, is the Sawdust Sessions: http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Sawdust_Sessions.htm The material is high quality, though that cannot be said of the video quality. And unfortunately some of the SS equipment featured is no longer available in the 'new' market. But very informative and Mark-centric.nduanetesh wrote: ↑Wed Nov 09, 2022 2:46 pm Thanks. Re: Which to choose...?
Please know that Shopsmith does do sales, typically every week. You can sign up to get notified of their sales via email. You can also go to the link below to sign up or to see what this week's specials are. For Black Friday or closer to Christmas, I think it varies year to year. Sometimes there will be a big sale on one item, but often it is a certain number of dollars off of a certain size purchase in your cart. Definitely take advantage of these sales for any repair parts and/or accessories. You'll be glad you did, e.g. if you can be patient and wait...oftentimes that item will go on sale sometime during the year. I did this, as an example, for the Shopsmith 5/8" Keyless drill chuck. It is normally $130, but I got it for like $100. Still expensive, but it is a beast and a VERY nice drill chuck IMHO. Easier for me to stomach it at $100 than it was at $130.nduanetesh wrote: ↑Wed Nov 09, 2022 2:46 pm Thanks. P.S. I agree with David on the Sawdust Sessions with Nick Engler. They are priceless though I really wish the published video quality was better. Hard to see what he is doing sometimes they are so low resolution, but he explains what he is doing most of the time anyway.

Re: Which to choose...?
Congratulations on acquiring a brand new used Shopsmith. For others reading this thread some day I'll point out that the age of a Shopsmith doesn't matter as much as it's condition, the table system it has, and the basic accessories new machines come with. The oldest units have smaller motors and a few other components that have been upgraded, but there is great backward/forward compatibility of the vast majority of parts. Missing accessories are common. Many machines were originally sold with lathe tools but not as many are found on used tools. The upper, lower, or all saw guard components may be missing as well as the drill chuck. Those can all be found new or used so whether missing or broken it can be made to work, but the cost of used machine should take those basic parts into consideration. Once you have a full set of accessories you can sometime find another used Shopsmith missing all that, but priced very low.

Re: Which to choose...?
As Ed pointed out,
That being said there are two great threads in the Maintenance and Repair section that are always near the top I would recommend to anyone interested in the Shopsmith Mark 5/V. The first is titled Everything Mark 5/V - Technical info, documentation, links. The other is titled Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and more. There is a lot of information contained there to help new users and even not so new users. For those interested in more of the history of the Shopsmith Mark 5/V there is a thread titled Shopsmith Mark 5 What When and Where which is at the link below.

For those reading this in the future, in this case the only reason age mattered was for which gray touch up paint to use, pre or post 11/01/2001. Beyond that, as Ed said, condition is more important followed by how complete the Shopsmith is when buying it used. In buying the Shopsmith nduanetesh did, he got a great deal but does need some additional items to make things able to work like the Bandsaw Table. His new to him Mark V is missing the sticker which identifies when it was made so it took some back-and-forth discussion to identify about when it was made. I even learned a little more in the discussion, that the Date Code Sticker moved at least two years before the addition of the Belt Cover Shaft Guard. At some point the Information/Warning Sticker with the Date Code Sticker peeled off and was lost. The Speed Chart Sticker is also peeling off. This would make me wonder why if I was buying that Mark V. The fact that the stickers were peeling off would have me check closer for any problems that conditions the tool was stored in may have also caused. Knowing up front what it will take to get a Shopsmith tool back into top shape and the cost determines if it is a good buy. I still believe nduanetesh did get a very good deal. One good thing nduanetesh did before buying used Shopsmith tools was to get help in the decision. As I and others here on the Shopsmith Forum have said many times, "We are always happy to help with any Shopsmith questions."For others reading this thread some day I'll point out that the age of a Shopsmith doesn't matter as much as it's condition, the table system it has, and the basic accessories new machines come with.
