Shopsmith's 75th Anniversary

Post by chapmanruss »

Today is the 75th Anniversary of the first 250 Shopsmith Tools made being shipped to the West Coast Montgomery Ward Stores that started it all. The Shopsmith Model 10E. Many of you know I have serial number 1077 which I finished its restoration 4 years ago today and as soon as I pick up some bolts to mount the motor from the hardware store later this morning serial number 1076 will be finished in time for its anniversary. Pictures of the "twins" to follow.

For now, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SHOPSMITH.

Thanks for the reminder, Russ - I second the motion!

In the spirit of honoring those original machines, here's my 10-E (S/N E5052).

And while I know that the original preliminary manual is a very noteworthy and rare document, I've seen a couple more copies of that materialize earlier this year, so I don't believe it holds the title of rarest document anymore. That distinction I believe belongs to the item below, which is the only original 10-E printed brochure that I've known to survive (April 1948 print date).

Some of you may remember Shopsmith Model 10E serial number 1077 on a different bench. It was first mounted on a Bench using the Shopsmith Metal Bench Ends and Retractable Casters with two 2" x 8" boards. It has now been moved to the matching wood bench like 1076 is on. Both have the addition of the Retractable Casters which came out later. The picture below is S/N 1077 on the first bench right after it was reassembled 4 years ago.

In the picture above it still has the more common A. O. Smith Motor. It now has (as of 11-15-22) its original A. O. Smith Motor as seen in my second post above with S/N 1076.
