Headstock lock broken

Post by ChrisHan »

Picked up a used mark v. Model 500. Runs good.
Noticed the headstock lock does not hold. Removed roll pin in handle...found end of lock rod broken. How difficult to fix?

It is not hard to fix. The rod has both LH and RH threads, so it's not something you can pick up at your local hardware store. SS sells it, Item 80 not separately available: https://www.shopsmith.com/service/heads ... iagram.htm but comes with handle and roll pin PN 513014 for $26.69 +S&T. I'd suggest carefully inspecting the lock wedges before ordering, get everything you need in one order. The rod is not easily broken, suggests another problem.(?)

Looks like previous owner overtightened it a couple times. Broke the end of the lock rod off. Going to have to drill it out to remove old parts. Everything needed is ordered. Thank you!!!

Easiest removal will be to cut the rod rather than drilling it out. If the handle is broken off, it might be even easier to just turn the wedges toward the center until it will clear the holes and come out. Easiest to work on with the motor removed and the headstock off the way tubes. Drilling it out will be no fun at all!

Yeah....cannot service the lock without removing headstock.
Nowhere near difficult to do. Waiting for parts
