Age of my “1956” Greenie

I have restored 2 Mark 5 Greenies and both had discoloration on the Motor Pan paint. The picture below is the second Greenie I restored and how it looked the day I picked it up. Although the Headstock Casting paint is gone the Motor Pan is discolored and no longer silver. The metal the paint is on also affects this along with the conditions it is stored in. On your Mark 5 prior to painting its current colors (nice looking by the way), notice the paint on the bench legs appears different than the Base and Headrest.

This Headstock along with the rest of this Mark 5 was in poor condition when I got it. The Motor Pan discoloration was worse on this one than the other Greenie I restored. It does look closer to the "Goldie" color but is not a match for it either.

After a lot of work, replacing damaged, worn and missing parts it looked much better.

Thanks Russ, I would prefer to think of the machine as an original unit and not a mashup of parts from two or more. That works with the apparent history of good care too. The machine was in very good shape when I got it.
I’ll see if I can find “before” pictures of the other greenie I restored to check the pan colour.

Band saw base casting????

The tubes are certainly different than any of the (three) others I’ve owned but I haven’t checked to see if the casting is. I have a newer one here as well so I can check. Might it just have the accessory offset tubes to allow drill press mode with the bandsaw on?
The jointer has the same tube setup. I haven’t seen them before.

Mounting tubes of that era are straight and may have a retaining ring as a depth stop.

There is no sticker on the bandsaw. There is a cast number on the table bottom that almost matches a Jan-Feb 1958 serial number but it’s a number short. Both the jointer and the bandsaw have tubes that terminate on an offset plate whose other end carries the bench end tubes.

Okay, I checked the castings and they appear to be the same, meaning only the tubes are different and could probably be swapped.

Interesting off set tubes - not oem, not vintage correct for SS - they look better than current oem(thicker bar).

I would keep using the band saw ones(even thicker bar would be gooder) - I like the upper length!!!(do not like the 'current short ones)

So likely owner custom offset mounts? That makes sense. ShopSmith guys are a clever and resourceful bunch.

Do you think the same goes for the jointer and jigsaw mounts?

Which ever bandsaw I decide to sell will definitely have the stock tubes. I’ll be keeping these.

I do not see any reason for the off set tubes with the jointer or jigsaw.(see below) I would surely keep the 'strange' mounts in any event.

Also not sure why offset mounts in that era(pre larger aluminum bandsaw table). Maybe to allow compensating for the idler shaft horizontal positioning varying with belt tension setting.

BTW that big setscrew under the tie bar is only properly used to insure waytubes not be twisted end to end. (way tubes center axis both in a flat plane)
